MLK: THE ASSASSINATION TAPES – New documentary, Smithsonian Channel –Sunday, February 12 at 9 p.m.,

To commemorate Black History month, this fascinating documentary chronicles the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a unique and original way. With no narrator, the filmmakers use only television and radio news footage of the period (most of which has not been seen since the tragic event) leading up to Dr. King’s fateful visit to Memphis, up through the aftermath of his murder. Knowing this specific period (April of 1968) was a seminal moment in the civil rights movement, several University of Memphis faculty members collected and saved every piece of media they could find, and it is these rare documents that have been woven together to create an incisive and thoroughly authentic film.
